Synopsis
Amadeo is a biopic of the Portuguese artist, Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, and tells the story of this mysteriously restless and unrelenting man, an artist out of definition, whose paintings often questioned the painting itself, indomitable, scandalous and misunderstood. Amadeo’s avant-garde work was often overlooked during his lifetime.
The film is a visual and emotional journey that celebrates the soul of art, and recreates three significant moments in the artist’s life - the first major modernist exhibition in Portugal, organised by the young artist in 1916, which revealed a new world to an old and conservative country; the presentation of the first works to Paris’s artistic elite in 1911; and the fateful year of 1918, when he succumbed to the Spanish flu pandemic that killed millions of people
all over the world.
