Negative Spaces: What lies in the intervals between text and image? A conversation between Julia Bourdet & Samarth (Roeqin)
06 Mar 2026 to 06 Mar 2026Sunaparanta Goa Center for the Arts invites you to an evening of conversation with resident artists Julia Bourdet, France, and Samarth (Roeqin), India, moderated by Tammanna Aurora. Titled Negative Spaces: What lies in the intervals between text and image?, the session explores their practice of creating graphic novels and comics.
American comics theorist Scott McCloud treats the gutters, the space between two consecutive panels in comics, as magical spaces that transcend the rules of time and space: sometimes transporting the reader across just a few seconds, sometimes years, and at other times to different dimensions and worlds.
The residency in itself has been a kind of magical space, an interval between projects for Julia and Samarth. In this conversation with Tammanna, they speak about their creative practice and share a glimpse of the work they have accumulated over the last two months. The discussion will also touch upon their habits of scribing and note-making, their work as art-educators, and how a peer community supports and shapes a personal artistic practice.
This event is part of the ongoing Artist-in-Residence Lab (AIR-L) program at Sunaparanta, which welcomes Julia Bourdet and Samarth (Roeqin) as resident artists for February 2026. Their residency traces
a shared journey from Angoulême to Goa, creating a dialogue between French and Indian comic traditions through an exchange of ideas, styles, and sensibilities. During their residency in Goa, the artists engaged with the local landscape and community, using observation, field visits, and creative experimentation to develop new narratives and expand their artistic practice.
