From over twenty-nine applications from practitioners, Sunaparanta announced the recipients of the second edition of VM Salgaocar Fellowship Grants 2023 - Farah Mulla and Wenceslaus Mendes.
As a sound artist deeply invested in the intersection of technology, body politics, and communal creation, Farah Mulla’s proposed project delves into the history and practice of Abbe Faria, the renowned hypnotist from Goa, within the context of her ongoing project, Ephemeral Conjunctures.
The primary objective of her research is to explore the symbiotic relationship between sound and light, drawing inspiration from the life and work of Abbe Faria, whose contributions to hypnotism have largely shaped the understanding of embodied knowledge. Her research during the `grant period’ will contextualize Abbe Faria's practices within the cultural and geographical milieu of Goa, and further investigate the potential uses of sound and light in hypnosis as a means of exploring and altering states of consciousness.
Farah Mulla is a multimedia artist based in Goa/Mumbai. Her background in science overlaps with her art practice that explores the perception of sound and its effects on human neurology and subjectivity. Often investigating different media, she uses the human voice, field recordings and other modes of inquiries to explore aspects of our listening experience and the invisible agency of sound via multiple modes of perception.
