Maksud Ali Mondal

Maksud Ali Mondal’s residency focuses on creating an ecosystem formed out of natural and industrial material, bringing together visual art, science, agriculture and gardening in an ephemeral bio experiment. During his residency, the artist occupied an existing installation (DOOSRA, The Other (2020), by Sanchayan Ghosh) situated on the outdoor lawns. Here, Mondal activated a bustling ecosystem with natural phenomena that are creeping in and taking over the existing dormant structure. The original maze assembled with processed wood, metal and glass is now inhabited by live organisms and detritus. Through the work, one is invited to an immersive labyrinth inside where one can encounter and engage with these invisible agents of nature. The work encourages new reflections on how we understand ourselves and other species as well as our place in the transformed environment.

Maksud Ali Mondal’s (BFA & MFA Kala-Bhavan, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan and Royal Academy of Art, Netherlands) practice includes facilitating an experiential understanding of organisms in a durational, constructed microcosm, using sculpture, painting, drawing, installation and photography. He was part of Kochi-Muziris Students’ Biennale (2018-19); the Serendipity Art Festival’s collaboration with Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (2019); Five Million Incidents organised by the Goethe Institut, Delhi and Kolkata, and conceived by Raqs Media Collective (2020); and Artissima Art Fair, Italy (2021).
